Supreme Court vs. Circuit Court
In Maryland, the Supreme Court and the Circuit Court are part of the legal system but have different roles and operate at different levels. The Supreme Court of Maryland is the highest court in the state and has mainly appellate jurisdiction. It mainly resolves legal issues on a state level and interprets state laws. It is also responsible for reviewing cases that were decided in the lower courts and has authority over the lower courts.
On the other hand, the Circuit Court of Montgomery serves as the circuit court in the county and has jurisdiction over most trials. It hears most types of cases, including civil, family, probate, juvenile, and criminal trials. Unlike the Supreme Court, it does not hear appeals and only operates at the county level.
